ACCREDITATION UPDATES

Is the NBCOBT accredited by any organization or certifying agency?
The NBCOBT will seek accreditation by and in accordance with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) requirements, the NBCOBT will

 “apply for accreditation either after one year of administration” of the OBT examination “ or when at least 500 candidates have been assessed. “ Furthermore, the NBCOBT will become a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence(ICE).  NBCOBT alignment with the aforementioned organizations will further advance our credentialing process through a validated examination method based on professional standards, research, and patient advocacy.


EXAMINATION INFORMATION

How do I know if I am able to challenge the OBT examination?
Prior to December 31st, 2013, all applicants must possess additional certifications in, but not limited to any of the following professional organizations:  (a) Athletic Training – ATC BOC credential or state licensed or graduate from an approved higher education institution athletic training program; (b) Orthopedic Technology - ROT/OTC/OPA; (c) Radiologic Technologist or Licensed X-ray Technologist; (d) Physician’s Assistant (PA-C), RN and/or LPN; and (e) Orthotic fitter – CFo, COF/C.Ped.  

All the above should possess one (1) year or more work experience fitting orthopedic braces under the supervision of a licensed physician.

NOTE:  After December 31st, 2013, all OBT applicants with less than two years experience in brace fitting must attend a 16 hour practical brace fitting course/workshop that meets the standards set forth by the NBCOBT in addition to passing the OBT Exam. 

Graduates of an approved college level athletic training program are automatically deemed qualified to take the OBT exam if their program includes teaching modules and practical experience in brace fitting.

What is the fee to the OBT examination?
The fee for the OBT exam is $100.00. If you hold current membership with the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP), there is a reduced fee of $50.00 for the OBT exam if taken before December 31st, 2013.  NOTE: Starting on January 1st, 2014, the OBT exam fee will be $100.00 for all.  This fee will also cover the NBCOBT membership fees through the next calendar year (ie., January 31st, 2014 IF TAKEN DURING 2013).  

How and where do I register to take the OBT examination?
Eligible candidates may register for the OBT examination by downloading the registration form.  The OBT examination is offered year-round in an online format.


What is the deadline application for the OBT exam?
Since the exam is offered online, all candidates may register online 24/7 with year-round testing available.


How many questions make up the test and how long do you have to take the OBT examination?
The OBT exam is 75-question exam offered online at the convenience of a location of your choosing. The test consists of all multiple choice type questions. Testing candidates have three (3) hours to complete all questions.  70% is the passing grade.

INFORMATION FOR CERTIFICANTS

Once I successfully challenge the OBT examination, how long does it take to receive my credentialing information?
All candidates who successfully pass the OBT with a minimum score of 70% shall receive their NBCOBT certificate and other credentialing materials in the mail within 2-3 weeks of completion.  However, all candidates will receive an email within 72 hours of completion that contains a pdf format of their certificate.  


How does the renewal process for the NBCOBT work?
Certification is renewed annually with the NBCOBT.  NBCOBT members should renew by December 31
st. Membership status will remain current through a 31 day grace period till January 31st, whereby your certification will expire. 


How do I pay for my annual NBCOBT renewal?
NBCOBT will send you a membership renewal form via email prior to October 31
st of your expiration year.  Membership are strongly encouraged to renewal through our secure online payment system.  However, you may fax or email payment to the membership department or by submitting a payment in the form of a check.   There will be a $50.00 late fee for those renewing after January 31st, 2014.


When will I get my renewal certificate?
Members should anticipate renewal certification documents approximately 2-3 weeks after your payment has been submitted.


What are the Continuing Education requirements to maintain certification with the NBCOBT?
All certificants are required to obtain 45 hours of continuing education every three (3) years.  The NBCOBT will accept continuing education hours approved for Certified Athletic Trainers, Orthopedic Technologist, Radiologic Technologists, Physician Assistants, Orthotists, Orthotic Fitters, Certified Pedorthists, etc.  NBCOBT will provide its members with the appropriate CEU forms for documentation.
