Orthopedic Brace Technologist Certification

OBT Certification requirements before December 31st, 2016

 

1.  Applicants must hold additional certifications in, but not limited to;

  •           Orthopedic Technology - ROT/OTC/OPA
  •           Athletic Training - ATC or graduate from an approved college

                level program

  •           Radiologic Technologist or Licensed Xray Technologist
  •           Certified Medical Assistant 
  •           Physicians Assistant, RN, NP
  •           Orthotic fitter - Cfo/COF/Cped

 

          And

 

2.  Have one year or more experience fitting orthopedic braces under the

    supervision of a licensed physician
 
      And
 
3.  Obtain a score of 70% or higher on the online Orthopedic Brace Technologist Certification exam
 
After December 31st, 2016, all OBT Applicants must  also attend a 16 hour practical
brace fitting course that meets the standards of the NBCOBT.
 
For current members of the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP), there is a $50.00 charge for the OBT exam if taken before December 31st, 2016.  Certification is renewed yearly and re-certification is required every three years by obtaining 45 hours of continuing education.     The NBCOBT will accept continuing education hours approved for Athletic Trainers, Orthopedic Technologist, Radiologic Technologists, Physician Assistants, Orthotists, etc.
 
All renewals, annual or re-certification, are required by January 31st of the renewal year starting in 2014.
 
Starting on January 1st, 2013, the OBT exam fee will be $100.00.  This fee will also cover the NBCOBT membership fees through January 31st, 2017.  The $100.00 renewal fee is required to maintain and hold the Orthopedic Brace Technologist credential.
